European Union wants to read all your private messages

A backroom push to revive Chat Control is underway. It is part of a broader attempt to make permanent mass scanning of private communication legal in the EU.

Chat Control is the name campaigners use for EU proposals that would force messaging providers to inspect private chats, photos, videos, and links for banned content. In practice, that means building surveillance systems into the services people rely on before messages are sent.

  • It treats everyone as a suspect by default, not just people under investigation
  • It destroys end-to-end encryption by pushing scanning onto devices or service infrastructure
  • Once this system exists, it can be expanded to more kinds of speech and more political purposes.
